Track of the Week - 22/07/16
This week's track is what I think is one of the best releases in a while from one of my favourite artists ever - the brand new single from Banks. With her second album set to be out on 30th September this year, she announced the release of 'Fuck With Myself' last week with a slightly terrifying music video involving a waxwork version of her own head being set alight and a group of contortionists wearing masks of her face - worth a watch if you're a fan of American Horror Story or similarly creepy films and TV shows.
'Fuck With Myself' is the second single taken from the new LP, following the release of 'Better' at the end of last year. It immediately reminded me of FKA Twigs; slightly awkward and clanging piano notes being used in the introduction of the track and also the unique way that she claims to "fuck with [herself] more than anybody else" at the end of each verse (you really need to hear it to understand what I mean).
Upon first hearing it, I wasn't completely enamoured with the song - I definitely liked it but it was a very different sound from that of her first album that took a few listens to get used to. But now I am completely obsessed with it and have pretty much played it non-stop since I downloaded it, so it can certainly be considered a 'grower'.
In terms of the meaning of the title and phrase "fuck with myself", Banks herself said "it means a lot of different things that I think a lot of people can relate to" when she visited Zane Lowe to premiere the track on his Beats 1 radio show. She claimed, "It could be like, 'I fuck with myself', like, 'I mess with myself more than anybody else.' It could be, 'I fuck with myself', kind of like, 'I'm feeling myself.'" Sounds like something that a lot of people will understand.
