Arctic Monkeys - iTunes Festival 2013

On Monday 9th September, I was lucky enough to be able to see one of my favourite bands, Arctic Monkeys, at iTunes Festival.

For those of you who don't know/understand what iTunes Festival is, it's a month long 'festival' that runs throughout the whole of September with different artists playing each night.  And the best part is that it's completely free!  The only problem is that the chances of actually winning tickets is very slim, but somehow my friend did and was kind enough to take me.

Arriving at the Roundhouse much earlier than we needed to, we managed to get to the barrier, which made us very very excited.  Neither of us have seen AM live before, so knowing that we would also be incredibly close to them made it all the better.  Up and coming band Drenge, who I hadn't heard of before, were playing the support slot.  Personally, I really didn't like their set.  They seemed to spend the majority of their time on stage staring at each rather rather than paying attention to the audience, and generally their music was much too heavy for my taste.

After much waiting, the Monkeys finally came on stage.  They all looked as cool as ever walking on, Alex Turner playing the typical rockstar card and wearing sunglasses for the first song.  The unforgettable, sullen drumbeats of 'Do I Wanna Know?' opened their hour and a half set to the enormous crowd that had accumulated.

Throughout the gig, they played a mixture of songs from the four LPs that they've already released and have been much loved by fans for years.  Along with this, they showcased a fair amount of material from new album 'AM' which was released that day.  Many hardcore fans already knew most of the songs, as it had been available to stream for free on iTunes some weeks before.

They closed their main set with 'R U Mine?' also taken from the new album.  The encore consisted of 'Suck It And See' and '505' where Alex Turner somehow managed to forget the words halfway through and made the slip-up fairly obvious to the audience ("I can't remember the fucking words").  The final song also featured a guest appearance from fellow musician, Miles Kane.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the gig, what with it being a great little venue and the band having such stage presence, I was somewhat disappointed that they missed out two of my favourite songs.  'Mardy Bum' and 'When The Sun Goes Down' both from the Arctic Monkeys' debut album, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' weren't played which slightly broke my heart.  Nevertheless, it was a fantastic performance and I'm so pleased that I can now say I've seen them live.
