Telluric by Matt Corby - Album Review


Sorry for not posting for a few weeks, I have had so many deadlines and not much time to write any posts!

I've been a huge fan of Matt Corby ever since I saw a YouTube video of him performing his track 'Untitled' acoustically by a fountain.  He has one of the most effortlessly beautiful and haunting voices that I've ever heard and I instantly fell in love with his music.

Although he actually achieved his major breakthrough back in 2011 with his fourth EP, 'Into the Flame', he had been yet to release a full album of his material - that was until he released the first single, titled 'Monday', from his debut LP 'Telluric' back in October 2015.  

The full album was released on Friday and I have had it constantly on repeat and have even turned my Dad into a fan; it is truly a work of art.  Each track stands out in its own right, but together it creates a wonderfully mellow soundtrack to have playing in the background, whilst you're doing anything really.  Corby uses intricately lush harmonies and various different guitars and percussion instruments to create the songs which tell stories of love, heartbreak and friendship.  As well as the instrumental and production aspects of the record being flawless, the lyrics written by Corby are also incredibly emotionally evocative.

I find it so difficult to pick a favourite track from the LP, but if I had to, it would most likely be a toss up between 'Monday' (apparently recorded in only ten minutes) or 'Sooth Lady Wine', songs that are very different from each other but equally fantastic.

I cannot urge you enough to listen to and purchase Matt Corby's record for yourself - it is an exceptional debut album, and arguably my favourite LP release of 2016 so far.  Matt Corby is a wondrous talent.

Arctic Monkeys - iTunes Festival 2013

On Monday 9th September, I was lucky enough to be able to see one of my favourite bands, Arctic Monkeys, at iTunes Festival. For those of you who don't know/understand what iTunes Festival is, it's a month long 'festival' that runs throughout the whole of September with different artists playing each night.  And the best part is that it's completely free!  The only problem is that the chances of actually winning tickets is very slim, but somehow my friend did and was kind enough to take me. Arriving at the Roundhouse much earlier than we needed to, we managed to get to the barrier, which made us very very excited.  Neither of us have seen AM live before, so knowing that we would also be incredibly close to them made it all the better.  Up and coming band Drenge, who I hadn't heard of before, were playing the support slot.  Personally, I really didn't like their set.  They seemed to spend the majority of their time on stage staring at each rather...

Track of the Week - 08/04/16

This week's track comes from British electronic artist Bibio and is taken from his seventh studio album, 'A Mineral Love', released earlier this month.  If you haven't heard of him before, then you'd probably recognise Bibio's 2009 track 'Lover's Carvings', which has been featured in the background of several adverts. The chosen track 'Town & Country' is wonderfully uplifting and has an almost jazz-like feel to it with the instruments that he uses.  It discusses the idea of working hard in the city for your money and how rapidly (and somewhat annoyingly) that you manage to spend it all.  Think most of us can relate to that problem. Despite talking about a somewhat disheartening topic, the promise of the countryside is what allows this song to retain its positive and summer appropriate vibe.  The contrast between the hustle and bustle of big cities and towns with the dream-like country makes this track ideal to listen to at th...

Track of the Week - 15/09/16

Can't believe that somehow nearly two months have managed to go by since I wrote my last post. But so many exciting things have been happening in music - which shamefully I have neglected to write about.  So I'm going to attempt to get back into the routine of my weekly track posts. This week's choice comes from British singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu's debut album, 'A Moment of Madness', which was released a couple of weeks ago.  I've really enjoyed all of the stuff that Izzy released prior to the LP - she's collaborated with one of my favourite bands, HONNE, and was also the voice of the BBC Euro 2016 theme tune. She has a really beautiful and smooth voice, a cross between the likes of Amy Winehouse and Corinne Bailey Rae.
