'Love Me' by The 1975 - Track Review

Following the incredible success of their self-titled debut album back in September 2013, The 1975 appeared to have vanished from the music industry's radar.  Until last week, when they premiered the first single, 'Love Me', from their second album, 'I Like It When You Sleep for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It'. Bit of a mouthful.

I was a huge fan of The 1975's first album, and have been looking forward to the release of some new material for a while.  And I must say that I'm somewhat disappointed.

It may be that 'Love Me' is a 'grower' track but so far I don't like it.  The introduction features the use of squeaky and slightly grating electric guitars and the vocals seem a little all over the place. I don't think it actually sounds much like lead vocalist Matt Healy's voice, which may merely be a result of overproduction.

The lyrics focus around the concept of a 'fame whore' which is similar to the band's older stuff that generally disapproved of people being self-absorbed. It's just quite difficult to understand what the lyrics actually are in this track (Healy shouts quite a lot of them).

One thing that I do really like is the 1980s electro sound that they seem to be transitioning into, which could be the grounds for some really great and refreshing songs on the rest of the album.

Personally, I'm not a fan of this particular track, and I know that there's been a fairly significant divide in their fans' opinions. Maybe I just need to give it a couple more listens, but I'm eager to hear what the LP has to offer.

Love Me is available to download from iTunes here
