'If I Go' by Ella Eyre - Track Review

I've been a big fan of Ella Eyre ever since I first heard her husky voice on 'No Angels' and 'Free' from the second volume of Bastille's cover mixtapes, 'Other People's Heartache' at the end of 2012. Since then, she's collaborated with the likes of Rudimental ('Waiting All Night') and Naughty Boy ('Think About It'). But she's finally doing her own thing.
Ella's just announced her first single, 'If I Go', taken from her debut album which is due for release later this year. The track received its first play as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record on Radio 1, and so far has received an extremely positive response.
I was lucky enough to see Ella perform the track live at her headline show at XOYO back in March, and have been eagerly waiting for her to bring out new material. The track is the epitome of everything that Ella's sound represents; deep and soulful vocals with lots of keys and heavy percussion. She's also used lots of backing vocals and harmonies which really help to amplify the super catchy hook.
Although all of the lyrics from Ella's solo songs so far focus predominantly on relationships, don't be mistaken into thinking that she's making love songs; quite the opposite. 'If I Go' depicts Ella as being uncertain as to whether or not to take a break from a relationship due to the demanding nature of the boy whom she's addressing. The lyrics, "But I need time and I need space / I need to live without your face", perfectly describe the stage of a romance where it can become completely suffocating to be with the other person.
Personally, I really like the track and am so looking forward to seeing what Ella does next.
'If I Go' is set for release on 6th July and is available to pre-order from iTunes now.
